That is how video installations, among other things, were created, which define themselves through their form of presentation, as distinct from television and cinema. They usually use several monitors or video projections, thereby specifically emphasising the sculptural, installational element. They also use so-called closed-circuit installations, where a live camera is used to project simultaneously the recorded objects onto the screen, thus forming a closed, self-reflecting circle that can also involve the viewer in the work of art.

One example is the interactive installation Der Zerseher (approximately: The De-seer) (1991) by the group Art + Com, developed by Joachim Sauter and Dirk Lüsebrink, which uses an eyetracker to follow the eye-movements of a viewer on a monitor, thereby transforming a Renaissance painting into ever-more abstract forms.

So sind interaktive Computerinstallationen oder ganze virtuelle Environments sehr beliebt, bei denen sich der Betrachter mittels Dateninterface wie Joystick, Helm, Handschuh oder anderes durch 2- oder 3dimensionale Projektionen bewegt und mit virtuellen Figuren oder Objekten interagiert. [G]

Interactive computer installations and completely virtual environments are very popular, for example, where the viewer uses a data interface such as a joystick, helmet, glove or other such item to move through two or three-dimensional projections and to interact with virtual figures or objects.

So zeigte die Ausstellung "Projekt 74" im Kölner Kunstverein 1974 unter anderem eine Modifikation Paiks berühmter Closed-Circuit-Installation "TV-Buddha", bei der er selbst den Platz des Fernsehzuschauers einnimmt, der sein eigenes Bild zeitgleich auf dem Bildschirm betrachtet und Valie Exports Installation "Raumsehen und Raumhören", bei der sie vor mehreren Kameras mit wechselnder Brennweite performte und mittels eines Videomischpultes verschiedene Einstellungsgrößen nebeneinander auf dem Bildschirm wiedergab. The exhibition Projekt 74, held at the Cologne Kunstverein in 1974, for example, included a modification of Paik's famous closed-circuit installation TV-Buddha, in which he himself takes the place of the television viewer who sees a picture of himself on the screen, and Valie Export's installation Raumsehen und Raumhören (approximately: Spatial Seeing and Spatial Hearing), in which she performed in front of a number of cameras with different focal distances, using a video mixer unit to reproduce frames of different sizes side by side on the screen.

All the more clearly striking must have been works of art which required a completely different attitude in the viewer, which changed themselves, which demanded participation, which played with light and shadow as if they were raw materials, and used materials that every do-it-yourselfer had at home.
