This online dictionary will help you learning and translating languages. We are thankful for your suggestions (contact form).

Programm languages

There are three program languages for BEOLINGUS: English (standard); German, and Spanish. In most cases, your browser will send your preferred language, so the display can adjust automatically. You can change the language manually in the menu at the right corner on top of the page .

To browse our pages use the usual back and forward arrows of your browser.

Structure of the translation result

The main entries of the translation result include the root word, and often synonyms, followed by further information like {part of speech}, [special subject] or (explanation) - see Abbreviations, e.g.
Ding {n}; Sache {f}

The indented results are grammatical forms or examples, e.g.:
Dinge {pl}; Sachen {pl}; Krempel {m}

By clicking at the triangles Show examples resp. Hide examples at the side of the main entry you can show or hide all additional forms and examples. Click at the double triangles resp. to show or hide all additional results.

Usually, you can click on any word in the translation results to start a new search.

Abbreviations in translation results

In most entries you'll find abbreviated additional information:
  • in braces: part of speech, e.g. {adj} for adjektive
  • in square brackets: usage hints:
    • country-specific usage, e.g. [Am.] - American English,
    • Style, e.g. [vulg.] - vulgar,
    • special usage, e.g. [chem.] - chemistry
  • in parenthesis: explanations, examples, hints
See the list of abbreviations. To get a unsorted list of all words from a special theme of the dictionary click on an abbreviation. A sorted list of of specific subjects you get within Spec. subjects.

Pronunciation

By clicking the speaker symbol [listen] a small window will open and you can hear the word spoken by a native speaker. There might be short delays, because the pronunciation data must be downloaded to your computer first. To use this function, you need the Flash plugin and of course a suitable sound system on your computer.

Specific subjects

In Special subjects you can find short compilations or large translation lists for some special themes. These lists might not be complete, though.

Grammar

In Grammar you can find useful grammar links for the chosen language and our examples for prepositions.

Random search

By clicking on Random search you can look at the translation of an random word. Let us surprise you...

Preferences

You can configure and save your preferences here. You'll find further hints to optimize your translation results.

PDA's and mobile phones: Small screen

Small window For smaller tools like PDA's or mobile phones you can use https://dict.tu-chemnitz.de/pda. This interface contains one search line only and shows the results in a short form.

Conversions

Within conversions you can convert various international measurement units, like Fahrenheit to Celsius, miles to kilometres etc.

Browsers

We support the following Web browsers: Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape (version 6 or higher), MS Internet Explorer version 6 (or higher), Opera version 8.5 or higher. Even so, we do not guarantee the functionality of our program.

These Web pages use the standard text size of your browser. You can adjust this according to your needs:

  • Internet Explorer: Menu View -> Text size
  • Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape: Menu View -> Text Size or Ctrl + or Ctrl -
  • Opera: Menu View -> Zoom or + or -

JavaScript and cookies

To use all functions your browser should support JavaScript and Cookies. JavaScript is needed for the following functions:
  • Show alternate word suggestions while you're typing
  • Show and hide further translations within the translation results
  • Functionality of the umlaut buttons
  • Vocabulary trainer
  • History of your search queries
  • Conversion of units

Cookies are needed to save your preferences and search history. Your settings will be the standard whenever you visit the BEOLINGUS site in the future.
