Dabei beziehe ich mich bis zur Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Länder 1990 ausschließlich auf westdeutsche Entwicklungen, da der Mangel an Zugang zu Technologien wie Video und Computer quasi zur Unmöglichkeit der Entstehung von Medienkunst in der ehemaligen DDR beigetragen hat. [G]

Until reunification of the two Germanies in 1990, my observations are limited to developments in West Germany, as limited access to technologies such as videos and computers meant that it was practically impossible for media art to be created in the GDR.

The Korean Nam June Paik was one of the founders of this artistic trend when he created disturbance patterns by magnetising television pictures in Exposition of Music - Electronic Television in 1963, and he bought the first video camera to appear on the market in 1965 in order to experiment with it. Another was Wolf Vostell with his TV-burying at the YAM Festival in New Brunswick, New York in 1963, featuring a television set, a turkey cutlet, barbed wire and music stands.

Germany is the country of media festivals, with probably more than 100 festivals of all kinds being held in venues throughout the republic, from the International Media Art Festival transmediale in the capital, Berlin, meanwhile Germany's largest media art festival, which has shifted its original focus from video art towards software and network art, particularly by culturally and politically active players, or the Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival for Expanded Media in the south of Germany, to the International Short Film Festival Hamburg, which puts on the very popular Trash Nite, which has become a cult event.
