Auf diesem Hintergrund betrachten wir die Förderung des deutschen Dokumentarfilms durch unseren jährlich auf der Duisburger Filmwoche vergebenen Preis als konsequente Erweiterung unserer bisherigen Filmarbeit, die sich seit Jahrzehnten nicht zuletzt für die weltweite Vermittlung eines differenzierten Deutschlandbildes stark macht. Before this backdrop, our support of German documentary film in the form of an annual award at the Duisburg Film Festival is the logical extension of our past film activities. The objective of these activities, which we have pursued continuously for several decades, is not least of all to fulfil our mission of disseminating a differentiated picture of Germany around the world.

Bei all den politischen Filmen, die in diesem Jahr auf dem Internationalen Dokumentarfilmfest München, dem DOK.FEST, liefen, hat ausgerechnet ein unpolitischer den ersten Preis des internationalen Wettbewerbs gewonnen: Castells ("Türme") des Münchners Gereon Wetzel. [G]

Of all the political films shown at this year's DOK.FEST, Munich's International Documentary Film Festival, the one that won first prize was actually a non-political film - Castells (Towers) made by Munich's very own Gereon Wetzel.

Davon zeugen z.B. Filme wie Dancing with myself über Menschen in Berlin, die nur beim Tanz zu selbstbewussten Personen werden. Die Filmemacherinnen Judith Keil und Antje Kruska - deren Putzfrauen-Geschichte Der Glanz von Berlin (Queens of Dust) schon erfolgreich im Kino liefen - erhielten dafür den Preis der Jugendjury auf dem größten deutschen Festival für Dokumentarfilme im Oktober dieses Jahres in Leipzig. [G]

This is evident from films such as Dancing with myself by filmmakers Judith Keil and Antje Kruska, which features a group of Berliners who gain self-confidence through dance, and which won the youth jury award at Germany's leading documentary film festival in Leipzig in October 2005. Their earlier film about a group of cleaners, Queens of Dust (Der Glanz von Berlin), was also a box-office hit in Germany.

Dazu gehört auch das Debüt von Bettina Braun Was lebst du? über Jugendliche verschiedener nationaler Herkunft in Köln, das den Publikumspreis während der Duisburger Filmwoche für Dokumentarfilme 2004 gewann - oder die langjährige Beobachtung junger Schauspielschüler in Die Spielwütigen von Andreas Veiel, der sich bereits mit der RAF-Auseinandersetzung Black Box BRD einen Namen machte. [G]

Then there is Bettina Braun's debut production Whatz up, (Was lebst du?) which stars a group of young people of diverse nationalities in Cologne; this documentary won the audience award at the Duisburg Documentary Film Week in 2004. Die Spielwütigen (i. e. The Players) by Andreas Veiel - who made a name for himself with Black Box BRD, a documentary about the Red Army Faction - takes the audience through the highs and lows of what it means to become a professional actor.

Der Dokumentarfilmer Andres Veiel hat einen grauenvollen Suff- und Skinhead-Mord im brandenburgischen Dorf Potzlow recherchiert, hat mit den Eltern und Freunden eines von Skin-Jugendlichen ermordeten Sechzehnjährigen gesprochen und die Mörder im Gefängnis besucht. [G]

The documentary film director Andres Veiel investigated a terrible murder perpetrated by skinheads under the influence of alcohol in the Brandenburg village of Potzlow; he spoke to the parents and friends of a sixteen-year-old who was murdered by adolescent skinheads and visited the murderers in prison.

Der vergleichende und analytische Blick auf "Korruptionskultur" und das von Lexy Rambadeta gesammelte Dokumentarfilmmaterial soll zu neuen Erkenntnissen über ein viel diskutiertes, aber unzureichend verstandenes gesellschaftliches und kulturelles Phänomen führen. [G]

The comparative and analytical examination of "corruption culture" and the documentary film material gathered by Lexy Rambadeta is intended to result in new knowledge about a much discussed yet insufficiently understood social and cultural phenomenon.

Deutschland war immer wieder Ausgangspunkt von neuen Prozessen und Richtungen in dieser Kunstgattung, denn sowohl der Experimentalfilm (der erste abstrakte Animationsfilm wurde von dem Maler und späteren Dokumentarfilmer Walter Ruttmann 1921 hergestellt), als auch die Videokunst (1963 durch die beiden Fluxuskünstler Nam June Paik und Wolf Vostell ins Leben gerufen) wurden in Deutschland oder von Deutschen begründet. Germany has often been the starting point for new processes and new directions in this art form, since both experimental film (the first abstract animation film was produced in 1921 by Walter Ruttman, a painter who later became a documentary film maker), and video art (created in 1963 by the two Fluxus artists, June Paik and Wolf Vostell) were founded in Germany or by Germans.

Die Kooperation, in dessen Rahmen das Goethe-Institut in seinem Saal den deutschen Dokumentarfilm "Das Goebbels-Experiment" zeigte und der Sender die Untertitelung des Films sowie einen Empfang danach beisteuerte, war ein "überwältigender Erfolg", schwärmt Sophia Michailidou. [G]

Within the framework of this co-operation Goethe Institute showed the German documentary film "Das Goebbels Experiment" (i. e. Goebbel's experiment) in its venue and also contributed by assisting the TV station with the sub-titling and by holding a reception after the screening: it was an "overwhelming success," enthuses Sophia Michailidou.

Diese neo-dokumentarischen Tendenzen verweisen auf die Nähe, die Experimentalfilm und später auch die Videokunst zur Gattung des Dokumentarfilms seit den Anfängen von Walter Ruttmann schon jeher hatten. [G]

This trend towards neo-documentary reflects the fact that since the early days of experimental film in the works of Walter Ruttmann, and later also in video art, experimental film has always been close to the genre of documentary film.

Doch mit dem Niedergang der Protest- und Alternativbewegungen geriet in den 80-er Jahren auch im Westen der selbstgewisse Aufklärungs-Anspruch des engagierten Dokumentarfilms in die Krise. [G]

But with the fall of the protest and alternative movements, the self-confident educational claim of the committed documentary film went into crisis in the 1980s in the West, too.

Ein beobachtender und gesellschaftskritisch engagierter Dokumentarfilm gewann mit Filmen von Klaus Wildenhahn, Peter Nestler, Eberhard Fechner und vielen anderen zunächst in Westdeutschland, mit Jürgen Böttcher, Winfried Junge, Volker Koepp aber auch in Ostdeutschland zunehmend an Bedeutung. [G]

An observational and socially committed documentary film gained in importance with films by Klaus Wildenhahn, Peter Nestler, Eberhard Fechner and many others, first of all in West Germany, but also in East Germany with Jürgen Böttcher, Winfried Junge and Volker Koepp.

Ein Dokumentarfilm und Diskussionen beim Runden Tisch in Jakarta sollen nun Handlungsmodelle gegen diese weit verbreitete Praxis liefern. [G]

It is now hoped that a documentary film and Round Table discussions in Jakarta will produce models for action to combat this widespread practice.

Eines meiner persönlichen Lieblingsfestivals ist das Dokumentarfilm und Videofest Kassel, das jedes Jahr mit einer hochkarätigen Auswahl aus beiden Sektoren glänzt, und natürlich bietet auch der Osten Deutschlands etwas zu entdecken: Die Werkleitz Biennale stellt Medienkunst zusammen mit anderen Kunstformen zu wechselnden Kontexten vor. One of my personal favourites is the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival, which shows an outstanding selection of works from these two fields each year, and, of course, there is also something to discover in the east of Germany. The Werkleitz Biennale presents media art in combination with other art forms in changing contexts.

Einige andere KünstlerInnen fingen ebenfalls in den 1990-ern wieder an dokumentarische und Videokunststile zu verbinden wie Angela Melitopolous in "Passing Drama" (1999), oder kommen ganz vom Dokumentarfilm und lassen sich durch essayistische Formen oder inhaltlich-medienreflexive Momente auch der Videokunst zuordnen, wie Stanislav Mucha mit "Ein Wunder" aus dem Jahr 2000 und Harun Farocki, der neben seiner Karriere als politischer Dokumentar- und Essay-Filmemacher mit Werken wie "Nicht löschbares Feuer" (1969) seit Ende der 90er immer öfter auch mit Installationen ("Ich glaubte Gefangene zu sehen", 2000 oder "Auge / Maschine", 2001) auf (Medienkunst-) Ausstellungen und -Festivals zu finden ist. In the nineties, a number of other artists, too, began to combine documentary and video styles once again, such as Angela Melitopolous in Passing Drama (1999). While the background of others is entirely in documentary film, they may also be placed in the video art category on account of their essayist forms or content with elements reflecting upon the media. Examples are Stanislav Mucha, with Ein Wunder (2000) and Harun Farocki, who not only has made a career as a political documentary and essay film-maker with works such as Inextinguishable Fire (1969), but whose installations have also been shown increasingly at (media art) exhibitions and festivals since the late nineties (I thought I was Seeing Convicts, 2000, or Eye/Machine, 2001).
