Every few years the fashion in furnishings changes and three-piece suites, kitchen cupboards and cabin beds land on the tip, where they pile up to form towering furniture mountains - seven million tonnes each year in Germany alone, of which only five per cent is reused. The rest is either burnt or turned into wood chips.

They ranged from the ecological understanding of aesthetics that arose in the seventies that was reflected in the recycled plastic furniture made by Bär & Knell (Beata Bär, born in 1962, Gerhard Bär, born in 1962 and Hartmut Knell, born in 1966), to conceptual work such as the Tabula Rasa designed by Ginbande back in 1987 or some objects by Volker Albus (born in 1949), to furniture by a designer like Konstantin Grcic (born in 1965), which is outstanding for its refined functional coherence and formal restraint.
