Der US-amerikanische Anglist und Judaist James E. Young, einer der zahlreichen kritischen Kommentatoren der Planungen und Debatten um das Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, wertete in diesem Sinne den häufig schmerzhaften Diskurs um Erinnerungskultur in Deutschland als das eigentliche Mahnmal. It was in this sense that the American English and Judaic Studies scholar James E. Young, one of the many critical commentators of the plans and debates on the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, evaluated the often painful discourse on remembrance culture in Germany as being the real memorial.
