In Daniel Kehlmann's historical novel "Die Vermessung der Welt (Measuring the World)", history "merely" supplies the background to the real themes of the novel, but there is a whole series of family novels and coming-of-age novels in which history itself moves to the centre of attention or dominates the atmosphere so much that the plot cannot escape from its gravitational pull.
