The awful effects isolation can have on the individual are the subject of Tevfik Baser's 40m² DEUTSCHLAND (1985), the story of a Turkish woman whose husband relentlessly locks her up in the flat out of fear she would be corrupted by the outside world and who can only free herself through his death.

Werden es diese oder andere deutsche Filme in das Programm von Filmfestivals und Programmkinos in den USA oder anderswo auf der Welt schaffen? Und werden sich junge deutsche Filmemacher auch weiterhin mit diesem schrecklichen und doch mehr und mehr isolierten Abschnitt der Geschichte auseinandersetzen? Darauf kann im Moment noch keine eindeutige Antwort gegeben werden, aber eines sollten Hirschbiegel, Gansel, Rothemund und ihre Mitstreiter wissen: Ihre Filme und die Fragen, die sie aufwerfen, sind für uns äußerst nützliche filmische Mitbringsel. Will any of these other titles make it to festivals, art-houses or specialty cinemas in America-or elsewhere in the world? And will young German filmmakers continue to grapple with this awful, yet somehow increasingly isolated period of history? The answers to these questions remain unclear, but there's one thing Hirschbiegel, Gansel, Rothemund and their brethren should know. Their films, and the issues they raise, render them the most useful of cinematic gifts.
