	Nach dem Krieg wurde er zuerst Theaterfotograf am Nationaltheater in Weimar und dann für etwa sechs Wochen Szenenfotograf bei den Filmstudios der DEFA in Potsdam-Babelsberg - zwei Stationen, die in seinen Bildfindungen immer spürbar bleiben. 1950 ließ er in München nieder und wurde ein Bildjournalist, der die Welt als Bühne sieht. [G]	After the war he first became a theatre photographer at the Nationaltheater in Weimar and then for about six weeks a photographer in the DEFA film studios at Potsdam-Babelsberg In 1950, he settled in Munich in 1950 and became a photo-journalist who sees the world as a stage.
	Nicht nur im Westen, sondern auch in der DDR entwickelte sich der Dokumentarfilm zum Medium einer kritischen Öffentlichkeit und erlebte unter dem Eindruck des wachsenden Widerstands und des Zusammenbruchs der SED-Herrschaft mit Filmen von Helke Misselwitz, Gitta Nickel, Thomas Heise und anderen noch einmal einen Höhepunkt, bevor die Wiedervereinigung und die Schließung der DEFA-Studios dieser bedeutenden dokumentarischen Filmtradition ein Ende setzte. [G]	Not only in the West, but also in the GDR, the documentary film developed into a medium for a critical public and, under the impression of growing resistance and the collapse of the SED regime, it once again experienced a heyday with films by Helke Misselwitz, Gitta Nickel, Thomas Heise and others before Reunification and the closure of the DEFA Studios put an end to this important documentary film tradition.
	Und nicht nur die Stiftung pflegt das filmhistorische Erbe. Seit 1998 unterstützt der Progress Filmverleih die Universität in Amherst, Massachusetts, beim Aufbau einer DEFA-Library, die im universitären Bereich und in Kulturinstituten einen Teil deutscher Filmgeschichte in den USA und in Kanada repräsentiert. [G]	And it is not only the film foundation that is cultivating DEFA's historical cinematographic legacy, but also the Progress film distributing company; since 1998 it has been helping the university in Amherst, Massachusetts, to set up a DEFA library that is to represent a part of German film history on an academic and cultural-institute level in USA and Canada.
