Deutschland war immer wieder Ausgangspunkt von neuen Prozessen und Richtungen in dieser Kunstgattung, denn sowohl der Experimentalfilm (der erste abstrakte Animationsfilm wurde von dem Maler und späteren Dokumentarfilmer Walter Ruttmann 1921 hergestellt), als auch die Videokunst (1963 durch die beiden Fluxuskünstler Nam June Paik und Wolf Vostell ins Leben gerufen) wurden in Deutschland oder von Deutschen begründet. Germany has often been the starting point for new processes and new directions in this art form, since both experimental film (the first abstract animation film was produced in 1921 by Walter Ruttman, a painter who later became a documentary film maker), and video art (created in 1963 by the two Fluxus artists, June Paik and Wolf Vostell) were founded in Germany or by Germans.
