[G]	One outstanding example is Ilija Trojanow's opulent, voluminous novel "Der Weltensammler (The Collector of Worlds)", which whisks the reader away to follow the British travelling scholar Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) on his adventurous journeys through Africa and the Middle East, enabling them to encounter these foreign worlds without laying them bare. Trojanow does not transfigure the fairy tale elements in his story, but preserves and at the same time transforms them.
	Von den wichtigen Romandebüts des letzten Herbstes soll hier "Caspar" von Beate Rothmaier, ein "unzeitgemäßes" Buch, das auf der Folie eines historisch verbürgten Falles des ausgehenden 18. Jahrhunderts und mit den Mitteln des Bildungsromans die ganz elementaren Fragen nach den Bedingungen des (kindlichen) Glücks, der Selbstfindung und -verwirklichung, dem Verhältnis von Schuld und Unschuld stellt, genannt werden, aber auch Kevin Vennemanns "Nahe Jedenev", ein Roman, in dem sich Märchenhaftes mit Bedrohlichem durchwebt, in dem Zeitgebundenheit suggeriert wird und der doch zeitlos, fast entrückt wirkt; ferner Kirsten Fuchs mit "Die Titanic und Herr Berg", ein Roman, in dem uns Sex und Crime im Schatten von Sozialhilfe und modernem Überlebenskampf serviert wird - aber gekonnt, und schließlich "Der kurze Traum des Jakob Voss" von Matthias Göritz, wo sich noch einmal alles um die alles bestimmende Lebensphase der Pubertät dreht. [G]	Of the important debut novels published last autumn, "Caspar" by Beate Rothmaier is particularly worthy of attention. This "anachronistic" book uses the methods of the Bildungsroman to raise absolutely fundamental questions about the conditions of (children's) happiness, self-discovery, self-realisation and the relationship between guilt and innocence against the background of a historically documented case of child neglect that occurred at the end of the 18th century. Then there is Kevin Vennemann's "Nahe Jedenev" (Near Yedenev), a novel in which the fairy tale is woven through with the menacing, a novel that gives the impression of being firmly rooted in a specific period and yet seems utterly timeless, rising rapturously above the world. Kirsten Fuchs, the author of "Die Titanic und Herr Berg (The Titanic and Mr Berg)", has written a novel in which sex and crime are served up adroitly in a setting overshadowed by the welfare system and the modern struggle for survival. Finally, we come to Matthias Göritz's "Der kurze Traum des Jakob Voss (The Short Dream of Jakob Voss)" in which, once again, everything turns around puberty as a phase that can determine someone's whole life.
