Auf diesem Hintergrund betrachten wir die Förderung des deutschen Dokumentarfilms durch unseren jährlich auf der Duisburger Filmwoche vergebenen Preis als konsequente Erweiterung unserer bisherigen Filmarbeit, die sich seit Jahrzehnten nicht zuletzt für die weltweite Vermittlung eines differenzierten Deutschlandbildes stark macht. Before this backdrop, our support of German documentary film in the form of an annual award at the Duisburg Film Festival is the logical extension of our past film activities. The objective of these activities, which we have pursued continuously for several decades, is not least of all to fulfil our mission of disseminating a differentiated picture of Germany around the world.

They range from the Duisburger Filmwoche for documentaries and the Internationales Leipziger Festival for documentary and animated films to the world-renowned Internationale Kurzfilmtage for shorts in Oberhausen.

Dazu gehört auch das Debüt von Bettina Braun Was lebst du? über Jugendliche verschiedener nationaler Herkunft in Köln, das den Publikumspreis während der Duisburger Filmwoche für Dokumentarfilme 2004 gewann - oder die langjährige Beobachtung junger Schauspielschüler in Die Spielwütigen von Andreas Veiel, der sich bereits mit der RAF-Auseinandersetzung Black Box BRD einen Namen machte. Then there is Bettina Braun's debut production Whatz up, (Was lebst du?) which stars a group of young people of diverse nationalities in Cologne; this documentary won the audience award at the Duisburg Documentary Film Week in 2004. Die Spielwütigen (i. e. The Players) by Andreas Veiel - who made a name for himself with Black Box BRD, a documentary about the Red Army Faction - takes the audience through the highs and lows of what it means to become a professional actor.

For Detlef Gericke-Schönhagen, head of the TV and film section at Goethe Institut, the making of cultural documentary films promotes democracy. "It is not just a case of promoting German filmmaking, as we do when we award our prize at the Duisburger Filmwoche (Duisburg Film Festival).

Ob "Kulturbrauerei" oder "Brauerei Pfefferberg" mit Architekturgalerie Aedes (geplanter Umzug von den Hackeschen Höfen im Juni 2006) und Vitra-Museum in Berlin (Neueröffnung im Herbst 2006), das neue Theaterhaus Stuttgart im 1923 von Emil Fahrenkamp erbauten Rheinstahlwerk, die zur Sammlung Grothe umfunktionierte Küppersmühle im Duisburger Innenhafen oder die Baumwollspinnerei in Leipzig-Plagwitz mit ihrer neuen Nutzung als Kunststiftung und Ateliergebäude - es fällt auf, dass fast immer sehr engagierte und hochrangige Architekten am Werk sind, wenn es gilt, derlei Industrierelikten mit Mitteln der modernen Architektur neues Leben zu implantieren. Whether one looks at former breweries like Berlin's KulturBrauerei and Brauerei Pfefferberg, which is soon to house the Aedes architecture gallery when it moves from the Hackesche Höfe (as planned for June 2006), the Vitra Design Museum (due to reopen in autumn 2006) in Berlin, the new Theaterhaus Stuttgart in the steel factory built for Rheinstahl in 1923 by Emil Fahrenkamp, the Küppersmühle mill and warehouse resurrected as a base for the Grothe Collection at the Duisburg Inner Harbour or the cotton spinning mill in Leipzig-Plagwitz that now accommodates an art foundation and studios for artists - it is noticeable that strongly committed, high-ranking architects are almost always involved in projects that seek to deploy the instruments of modern architecture to inject new life into industrial relics of this kind.
