Unfortunately, the Werner comics have also failed to develop in formal terms. The drawings may have become ever smoother, more appealing and more colourful, but it was precisely the delicate yet expansive style of the early years, with its chaotic mixture of empty spaces, wild hatching and manic-obsessive attention to detail, that was so unusual and attractive at that time. The RaceEiskalt (i.e. Ice Cold) - the fourth volume in the series - appeared in 1985 and is the only comic book ever to have been placed on the German bestseller list. In it, Feldmann relates, among other things, the race between Werner's souped-up, three-engine Horex motorbike (the "Red Porsche Killer") and the pub landlord Holgi's red Porsche.

"Zungenwerk" is the title of a poem by Hans Magnus Enzensberger which makes audible the formation of human speech, the work of the muscles of the lungs and tongue, the windpipe and the vocal cords, "Flüstern, Summen, Keuchen, Stammeln - / wirre Wirbelstürme im Luftmeer" (i.e. Whispering, humming, panting, stuttering - / chaotic cyclones in a sea of air).
