Doch trotz steigender Auflagenzahlen und der Tatsache, dass 2003 bereits der vierte abendfüllende Werner-Zeichentrickfilm in die Kinos kam, haftet der beliebten Figur etwas Vergangenes an. Sie verkörpert das kleinbürgerlich-hedonistische Lebensgefühl junger, in den 80er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts sozialisierter Bundesrepublikaner. Ein Gefühl, das von Politikverdrossenheit, fehlenden gesellschaftlichen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten und dem sinnstiftenden Rückzug ins Private gekennzeichnet ist: Glück empfindet Werner nur am Rande eines Baggerlochs inmitten seiner Freunde neben einem Kasten Bier oder auf dem Rücken des geliebten Motorrads. But despite the rising sales figures and the fact that the fourth full-length Werner cartoon film arrived in the cinemas in 2003, there is still something of the past about this popular character. He embodies the mood of petit bourgeois hedonism among young West Germans who were socialised during the 1980s: a mood marked by disillusion with politics, a lack of opportunities to shape society and a tendency to withdraw into the private sphere in search of meaning. Werner only feels happy on the saddle of his beloved motorbike or next to a crate of beer on the edge of a gravel pit surrounded by his friends.

Im Juli 1950 kommt es zu einer letzten Fühlungnahme. Benn, der für die Lyrikanthologie Geliebte Verse als eines seiner zehn Lieblingsgedichte Brechts Terzinen über die Liebe benennen will, ruft Helene Weigel an und bittet sie um die Abdruckgenehmigung und den Text des Gedichtes. [G]

A last contact took place in July 1950. Benn, who wanted to include Brecht's Terzinen über die Liebe (Tercets on Love) in his poetry anthology Geliebte Verse (Beloved Verses) as one of his ten favourite poems, called up Helene Weigel and asked her for the text of the poem and permission to print it.
