[G] Dresdens Zwinger was commissioned by Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony, as a complex of pavilions for entertainment and festivities. This Baroque masterpiece was constructed on the site of the former city fortifications and now houses a number of world-class museums.

[G] Thus in the 19th century the Bamberg Rider, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture (created in 1237 and standing in the Bamberg Cathedral), had received little notice, as Gebhardt shows, whereas 60 years later this figure set up in a Christian church became a mounted hero with nationalistic significance.

[G] Since then, thousands of donations have flowed in from people all over the world who are keen to support the restoration of this architectural masterpiece, constructed by the architect George Bähr between 1726 and 1743, so that it once again dominates the city's skyline.

[G] If architecture means taking shape, construction and residential technology to the highest possible level of sophistication and then to refine it even further, then Sobek's house is a masterpiece. If construction means creating a functioning, comfortable home, then it is a rigid artefact that is quite unsuitable for day-to-day use.
