Sie machte es möglich, dass er, während Deutschland in den Krieg zog und die Kulturlandschaften in Schutt und Asche versanken, seine Ausbildung absolvierte, verbunden mit den besten Namen seiner Zeit: 1938 Schauspielschule in Berlin unter Gustaf Gründgens (im selben Jahr wird Wicki wegen seiner Mitgliedschaft in einem kommunistischen Jugendverband jüngster Gefangener des Konzentrationslagers Sachsenhausen), das weltberühmte Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Wien, kleinere Rollen und auch Inszenierungen unter anderem am Wiener Burgtheater und dem Wiener Theater in der Josefstadt, Engagements in Bremen und Salzburg (unter dem großen Otto Falckenberg). Nach Kriegsende verließ er Deutschland und ging 1945 in die Schweiz. [G] It was this passion that, even while Germany went to war and its cultural life and heritage were decimated, enabled him to complete his training under the tutelage of the leading figures of the period. In 1938, he attended stage school in Berlin, where he studied acting under Gustav Gründgens. Later that year, however, he was arrested for belonging to a communist youth organisation and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he was the youngest prisoner. After his release, he enrolled at the world-famous Max Reinhardt Seminary, a drama school in Vienna. Small parts followed at Vienna's Burgtheater and Josefstadt theatres, where Wicki also gained his first directing experience. He was subsequently engaged by theatres in Bremen and Salzburg (where he worked under the great Otto Falckenberg), then in 1945, after the end of the war, he left Germany and went to Switzerland.
