[G]	It was this passion that, even while Germany went to war and its cultural life and heritage were decimated, enabled him to complete his training under the tutelage of the leading figures of the period. In 1938, he attended stage school in Berlin, where he studied acting under Gustav Gründgens. Later that year, however, he was arrested for belonging to a communist youth organisation and sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he was the youngest prisoner. After his release, he enrolled at the world-famous Max Reinhardt Seminary, a drama school in Vienna. Small parts followed at Vienna's Burgtheater and Josefstadt theatres, where Wicki also gained his first directing experience. He was subsequently engaged by theatres in Bremen and Salzburg (where he worked under the great Otto Falckenberg), then in 1945, after the end of the war, he left Germany and went to Switzerland.
