Als Gegenmodell zur als unzureichend empfundenen Alleinherrschaft rationalen Denkens von Descartes bis Kant steht Herders ganzheitlicher Ansatz, der auch das "Andere" der Vernunft umfasst: "Körper ohne Geist lieben, sagt ein Weltweiser voll großer Anschauung, ist Abgötterei; Seele ohne Körper, Schwärmerei; jedes im Andern wahre, ganze Menschheit." Herder's holistic attitude contrasts with the total domination of rational thought from Descartes to Kant, an approach felt by many to be inadequate. Herder's thinking also encompasses the "other" of reason: "Loving the body without the spirit, said a philosopher full of great insight, is idolatry; loving the soul without the body is zealotry; loving each in the other, is true, whole humanity" ("Vom Erkennen und Empfinden", Of Cognition and Sensation, 1775).

Herders Blick auf die Völker und ihre Sprachen, auf den Charakter einzelner Nationen - der ohne nationale Borniertheit auskam - ermutigte etwa im 19. Jahrhundert auch kleinere Völker dazu, ihre Sprache und Kultur als eigenständig wahrzunehmen und zu erforschen. [G]

In the 19th century, Herder's view of peoples, their languages and the character of individual nations - which was untainted by nationalistic bigotry - also encouraged smaller nations to explore their languages and cultures and regard them as having value in their own right.

In the tenth book of his autobiography, "Dichtung und Wahrheit" (Poetry and Truth), Goethe describes the role played by Herder, who was well known for his obstinacy and intransigence, as follows: "The influence of this good-humoured blusterer was great and significant."

So groß sein Einfluss auf den Sturm und Drang, die deutsche Klassik und Romantik sowie die Sprach- und Geschichtswissenschaft auch war, Herders Werk lässt sich nicht einfach auf einen Begriff bringen. [G]
