But despite the rising sales figures and the fact that the fourth full-length Werner cartoon film arrived in the cinemas in 2003, there is still something of the past about this popular character. He embodies the mood of petit bourgeois hedonism among young West Germans who were socialised during the 1980s: a mood marked by disillusion with politics, a lack of opportunities to shape society and a tendency to withdraw into the private sphere in search of meaning. Werner only feels happy on the saddle of his beloved motorbike or next to a crate of beer on the edge of a gravel pit surrounded by his friends.
