Their appreciation is mainly directed towards the old treasures in the collections of the Bavarian metropolis's state library. Among these are many precious objects from the early days of book-printing (1450-1500) and one of the world's most important collections of manuscripts.

For instance, it is responsible for the collection of German prints from 1871 to 1912, for compiling the definitive international catalogue of incunabula (pre-16th century printed products) and managing the supra-regional centralised database of autographs (http://kalliope.staatsbibliothek-berlin.de) as well as the nationwide serials database which contains all German and foreign serial titles held by German libraries.
