Er rechnet diese Form des Heimatromans zur Trivialliteratur in der Nachfolge Ludwig Ganghofers (1855-1920) und grenzt sie von den Romanen der Heimatdichtung (Bauernroman, Dorfgeschichte) ab. Mittlerweile aber etablieren sich statt "Trivialliteratur" auch positivere Begriffe wie "populäre Literatur" oder "Schemaliteratur". [G] More recently the term 'trivial literature' is being replaced by more positive designations such as 'popular' or 'schematic' literature.

Ob Groschenromane und andere Trivialliteratur harmlos oder gefährlich sind, wird seit langem, auch wissenschaftlich, diskutiert. [G] Whether penny novels and other trivial literary genres are harmless or dangerous has long been a subject even of scientific debate.

Vor allem in den 50er Jahren galt Trivialliteratur als "Unkunst", Kitsch, "Kulturschädling". [G] During the 1950s, above all, trivial literature was derided as 'non-art', 'kitsch', a 'cultural pest'.

Zu den bekanntesten deutschsprachigen Trivialliteratur-Autoren gehört noch immer Hedwig Courths-Mahler (1867 - 1950), die 208 Unterhaltungsromane verfasste. Sie prägte damit den "Frauenroman", in dem es um Heirat und sozialen Aufstieg der Figuren ging. [G] Still among the best-known German-language writers of trivial literature is Hedwig Courths-Mahler (1867 - 1950). She produced 208 'entertainment' novels, thus coining the 'women's novel', the subject matter of which is marriage and the protagonists' climb up the social ladder.
