Was aber verbindet die Antipoden der deutschen Literaturgeschichte? Verbindet sie denn überhaupt etwas außer ihrer Zeitgenossenschaft und der Tatsache, dass sie bis heute als misogyn, egoman und politisch verdächtig verunglimpft werden? Wohl vor allem die Ablehnung des hohlen Pathos bürgerlich romantischer Kunstideale und ein bereits früh ausgeprägter Hang zum Katastrophalen, oder produktiv gewendet: zur Radikalisierung. [G]

But what united the antipodes of German literary history? Is there anything at all that links them apart from the facts that they were contemporaries and that through to the present they are denigrated as misogynist, egotistical and politically suspect? Above all, one would probably have to mention their rejection of the hollow pathos of the bourgeois romantic artistic ideal and their tendency - already formed at a young age - towards the catastrophic, or more productively: radicalisation.
