1949 nahm er das Studium der Philosophie, Geschichte, Psychologie, Germanistik und Ökonomie in Göttingen auf und wechselte nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Zürich nach Bonn, wo er 1954 bei Erich Rothacker mit einer Arbeit über Schelling promovierte. [G]

In 1949, he went to Göttingen to read philosophy, history, psychology, German literature and economics, and after a short period in Zürich, he moved to Bonn, completing a doctoral thesis on Schelling in 1954 under the supervision of Erich Rothacker.

Hauff studierte zunächst Theaterwissenschaften, Germanistik und Soziologie. Er brach das Studium ab, als ihm die Produktionsfirma Bavaria einen Ferienjob als Assistent in der Unterhaltungsabteilung anbot. [G]

Hauff was a student in dramatic arts, German and sociology, but dropped out when Bavaria Studios offered him a vacation job as an assistant in the light entertainment division.
