Since the 1990's architects in particular have been occupied with the question of a contemporary form of ornamentation as a medium of façade design, whether it was technically motivated in the case of the buildings by French architect Jean Nouvel, who based the sun screening system of the facade of the L'Institut du Monde Arabe (Institute of the Arab World) on Moroccan tile patterns, or illustrative, as with the work of Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, who used a microscopically enlarged image of a leaf as a recurrent pattern on the facades of the Ricola Headquarters.
