Der Flughafen ist in Mitteldeutschland gelegen (in der Nähe zu fünf Hauptstrecken des transeuropäischen Verkehrsnetzes und gesamteuropäischen Korridoren) und befindet sich im Schnittpunkt zweier Bundesautobahnen, die jeweils den Norden und Süden Europas (A 9) sowie West- und Osteuropa (A 14) miteinander verbinden. Er verfügt zudem über eine exzellente Verkehrsanbindung im Schienen- und Straßennetz.
