Der Fotoeffekt PEc bei einer beliebigen Konzentration C ist definiert als das Produkt des Wirkungseffekts REc und des Dosiseffekts DEc, d. h. PEc = REc × DEc. Der Wirkungseffekt REc bezeichnet die Differenz zwischen den bei Abwesenheit und Anwesenheit von Licht ermittelten Wirkungen, d. h. REc = Rc (–;Irr) - Rc (+Irr).
