See {Note} under {Cardinal}. 3. A parish priest, or a chaplain, of the Greek Church. 4. (Zo[94]l.) A fish; the ruff. {Pope Joan}, a game at cards played on a round board with compartments. {Pope's eye}, the gland surrounded with fat in the middle of the thigh of an ox or sheep. --R. D. An arctic sea bird {Fratercula arctica}) allied to the auks, and having a short, thick, swollen beak, whence the name; -- called also {bottle nose}, {cockandy}, {coulterneb}, {marrot}, {mormon}, {pope}, and {sea parrot}. Note: The name is also applied to other related species, as the horned puffin ({F. corniculata}), the tufted puffin ({Lunda cirrhata}), and the razorbill. {Manx puffin}, the Manx shearwater.
