      An American marine fish of the Herring familt ({Brevoortia
      tyrannus}), chiefly valuable for its oil and as a component
      of fertilizers; -- called also {mossbunker}, {bony fish},
      {chebog}, {pogy}, {hardhead}, {whitefish}, etc.
