   Kava \Ka"va\, n. [Polynesian.] (Bot.)
      A species of {Macropiper} ({M. methysticum}), the long
      pepper, from the root of which an intoxicating beverage is
      made by the Polynesians, by a process of mastication; also,
      the beverage itself. [Written also {kawa}, {kava}, and
      {ava}.]

From Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary [easton]:
   Ava
      a place in Assyria from which colonies were brought to Samaria
      (2 Kings 17:24). It is probably the same with Ivah (18:34;
      19:13; Isa. 37:13). It has been identified with Hit on the
      Euphrates.
