Umbrageous \Um*bra"geous\ (?; 277), a. [Cf. F. ombraqeux shy, skittish, suspicious, in OF. also, shady. See {Umbrage}.] 1. Forming or affording a shade; shady; shaded; as, umbrageous trees or foliage. Umbrageous grots and caves Of cool recess, o'er which the mantling vine Lays forth her purple grape. --Milton. 2. Not easily perceived, as if from being darkened or shaded; obscure. [Obs.] --Sir H. Wotton. 3. Feeling jealousy or umbrage; taking, or disposed to take, umbrage; suspicious. [Obs.] --Bp.
