   Tributary \Trib"u*ta*ry\, a. [OE. tributaire, F. tributaire, L.
      tributarius. See {Tribute}.]
      1. Paying tribute to another, either from compulsion, as an
            acknowledgment of submission, or to secure protection, or
            for the purpose of purchasing peace.
