Germany is the country of media festivals, with probably more than 100 festivals of all kinds being held in venues throughout the republic, from the International Media Art Festival transmediale in the capital, Berlin, meanwhile Germany's largest media art festival, which has shifted its original focus from video art towards software and network art, particularly by culturally and politically active players, or the Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival for Expanded Media in the south of Germany, to the International Short Film Festival Hamburg, which puts on the very popular Trash Nite, which has become a cult event.

In the nineties, a number of other artists, too, began to combine documentary and video styles once again, such as Angela Melitopolous in Passing Drama (1999). While the background of others is entirely in documentary film, they may also be placed in the video art category on account of their essayist forms or content with elements reflecting upon the media. Examples are Stanislav Mucha, with Ein Wunder (2000) and Harun Farocki, who not only has made a career as a political documentary and essay film-maker with works such as Inextinguishable Fire (1969), but whose installations have also been shown increasingly at (media art) exhibitions and festivals since the late nineties (I thought I was Seeing Convicts, 2000, or Eye/Machine, 2001).
