At the last meeting it was proposed that there (should [Br.]) be a survey of structures in green spaces.

[G] In 2002 her films, Southeast Passage, A Journey to the New Blank Spaces on the Map of Europe (Südostpassage) and The Specimen (Das Exemplar), were presented at the documenta 11 in Kassel.

. . [G] . . . but there are other spaces where you feel comfortable?

[G] On the one hand, as a stage designer he remains faithful to old partners like Peter Zadek and Luc Bondy; on the other, he also designs collage-like artistic spaces for Jürgen Kruse.

[G] He cites the impressive example of Ciudad Abierta which creates acoustic impacts and an acoustic link between indoor and outdoor spaces.

[G] As one of the designers of urban acoustic planning projects in Florence and Zurich, he favours a garden design-based model which does not simply consist of "sound-proofing" public spaces.

[G] Continuing high levels of unemployment and the job insecurity experienced by some parts of the working population are associated with social segregation in disadvantaged urban districts and a decline in public institutions' ability to integrate different groups and provide effective services. This is affecting all aspects of life in these cities - from their schools to their increasingly dilapidated public spaces.

[G] Many other artists have also engaged with these motifs in the past and developed alternatives - actually responding faster and more effectively than the urban planners and social psychologists: contemporary art has taken on a political role, no longer dedicated to the aesthetic decoration of public spaces, but confidently intervening to address specific shortcomings in the urban environment and work out proposals for their rectification.

[G] The increasing privatisation of public spaces also means that private sector facility operators can issue house rules which forbid people from begging, drinking alcohol, sleeping or merely sojourning there.

[G] Unfortunately, the Werner comics have also failed to develop in formal terms. The drawings may have become ever smoother, more appealing and more colourful, but it was precisely the delicate yet expansive style of the early years, with its chaotic mixture of empty spaces, wild hatching and manic-obsessive attention to detail, that was so unusual and attractive at that time. The RaceEiskalt (i.e. Ice Cold) - the fourth volume in the series - appeared in 1985 and is the only comic book ever to have been placed on the German bestseller list. In it, Feldmann relates, among other things, the race between Werner's souped-up, three-engine Horex motorbike (the "Red Porsche Killer") and the pub landlord Holgi's red Porsche.

[G] Shrinking cities also throw up questions in another respect: how do we deal with the surplus of spaces and buildings? What gives a city coherence if the built environment is no longer a continuum? How can unplanned urban structures be used in daily life?

[G] In Struth's photograph, however, the focus is not on the middle-class architecture of the houses, but rather on the spaces between the buildings, the street leading to the horizon, and the grey sky above.

[G] When it comes to researching the cultural and historical dimensions of these spaces Benjamin's "flâneur" provides us with an important instrument - not only for the way the residents experience and move about in these spaces, but also for any literature that is written about them from the anti-modern-age point of view.

Chancen des Internet für viele europäische Öffentlichkeiten [G] Internet opportunities for many European public spaces

[G] That means reducing empty spaces, starting from the outskirts and moving towards the centre, thereby consolidating the functionally significant heart of the city.

[G] As many of the spaces merge into one another, there are links leading across between the spirals that allow the visitor to experience exciting changes of atmosphere as they move between brilliant sunshine and theatrical lighting, liberating views of the outside world and recreated historical settings that would not be out of place on the stage.

[G] The unusual open spaces around the agency, designed by the Berlin office "St raum a", show that even landscape architects have their young avant-garde.

Denn Isa Gensken lässt keine wohnlichen Schutzräume entstehen, sondern klaustrophobische Angsträume einer negativ besetzten Architektur. [G] For Genzken creates not comfortable, sheltering spaces but claustrophobic ones full of the anxiety of a negatively charged architecture.

[G] Whether it is waiting rooms, restaurants, aeroplane interiors or ballrooms that provide the initial inspiration for her spatial creations, in the end her peepshows always give the impression of being dreamed spaces.

[G] Yet the centre is still dominated by big empty spaces, still bearing the scars of war and of the former border, and by bombastic post-war constructions.
