("Vom Erkennen und Empfinden", 1775) [G] Herder's holistic attitude contrasts with the total domination of rational thought from Descartes to Kant, an approach felt by many to be inadequate. Herder's thinking also encompasses the "other" of reason: "Loving the body without the spirit, said a philosopher full of great insight, is idolatry; loving the soul without the body is zealotry; loving each in the other, is true, whole humanity" ("Vom Erkennen und Empfinden", Of Cognition and Sensation, 1775).

Andernfalls, sagt Kant, wären ästhetische Urteile nicht möglich. [G] Otherwise, says Kant, aesthetic judgements would not be possible.

[G] In terms of moral philosophy, in reference to Immanuel Kant, for instance, it is possible to argue against the legitimacy of suicide which itself is contradictory because the act of committing suicide constitutes a violation of the 'perpetrator's' dignity.

[G] With this idea, Kant achieves both a sound and far-reaching definition of aesthetics.

[G] In this view, Kant differs from his predecessors as well as from many of his successors.

[G] For Kant treats not only beauty in nature and in the composition of works of art; he also develops a far-reaching theory of an aesthetic consciousness that finds occasions for a special form of sensuous attention not only in nature and art but everywhere in the world.

[G] For on the basis of Kant's theory we can come to understand why aesthetic pleasure occurs not only before works of art but also in many situations of everyday life.

[G] More clearly than Baumgarten, Kant ties the analysis of the aesthetic object to the analysis of the perception of this object (and the analysis of this perception to the analysis of judgements that give report of its enactment).

[G] The timeliness of Kant's aesthetics lies in its enduring achievement of having enlarged the sense for aesthetic phenomena.

Die überragende Ausnahme bildet der Weltbürger aus Königsberg, Immanuel Kant. [G] Immanuel Kant, the world citizen from Königsberg, is an outstanding exception.

[G] Here the powers of cognition are not used for the sake of cognition: this is the core of the numerous paradoxical definitions with which Kant characterises the aesthetic attitude at the beginning of his aesthetics.

[G] This theory of aesthetic appearing, together with a minimal concept of aesthetic perception, provides a minimal concept of the aesthetic object.

[G] This negative freedom, according to Kant, also has its positive side.

[G] Immanuel Kant's theory of aesthetics is only half a book long.

[G] Herder studied theology and philosophy in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad) - where his lecturers included Kant and Hamann. He subsequently worked as a teacher and preacher in Riga until setting off for France in 1769.

[G] For the contemporary discussion of aesthetics, on the contrary, Kant is important precisely because he did not take this step.

[G] For Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel, the most influential aesthetic theorist after Kant, the centre of the discipline lay in the study of the historical and contemporary forms of art, and he therefore devoted his Lectures on Aesthetics (Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik) without further ado to the "philosophy of art".

[G] If we proceed from the classical position with which aesthetic modernity begins, that of Kant, then decisive for the concept of the aesthetic is a methodological distance to sensuous impressions.

[G] Here, however, one should develop Kant's thinking further on the foundation of his own basic ideas. The moral imperative that only the law, guaranteed by official (constitutional) means, should decide upon any human conflicts, and not private opinion or force, also applies to inter-state conflicts.

Immanuel Kant: ein umfassender Kosmopolitismus [G] Immanuel Kant: an all-round cosmopolitan
