Für Gitterreferenzen in Regionen außerhalb Kontinentaleuropas können die Mitgliedstaaten eigene Gitter bestimmen, die auf einem geodätischen Koordinatenreferenzsystem basieren, das dem ITRS und der Lambertschen flächentreuen Azimutalprojektion sowie den für das in Abschnitt 2.2.1 beschriebene Gitter dargelegten Grundsätzen entspricht.
