[G]	Since, although magnificent and prominently situated, this historical building was much smaller than Rossi's design, Christoph Stölzl, the museum's director at the time, persuaded the Chancellor to agree to yet another special gift, a new wing commissioned personally from the distinguished American architect Ieoh Ming Pei (86), whose fame in Europe is founded mainly on his glass pyramid at the Paris Louvre.
