Pursuant to the Italian authorities' undertakings, the reduction in capacity will consist in reducing the number of places provided on the various ships Caremar uses on this route, from 1142260 to 633200 during the winter season and from 683200 to 520400 during the summer season, while maintaining the current number of journeys so as to ensure the mobility of the islands' residents.

Des Weiteren ist zu berücksichtigen, dass die Region Sizilien durch das Regionalgesetz Nr. 12 vom 9. August 2002 (der Kommission mit Schreiben vom 12. September 2002 übermittelt und am 22. Oktober 2002 mit dem Aktenzeichen A/68547 registriert) verfügt hat, dass zur Stärkung der Seeverkehrsverbindungen mit den kleineren sizilianischen Inseln und im Interesse der Mobilität der Inselbewohner die Verkehrsdienste zur Anbindung dieser Inseln per Ausschreibung für einen Zeitraum von fünf Jahren zu vergeben sind. It should also be borne in mind that the Sicily Region, through Regional Law No 12 of 9 August 2002 (sent to the Commission by letter dated 12 September 2002 and registered under the number A/68547 on 22 October 2002), established that, to reinforce the maritime connections with the Sicilian minor islands and in accordance with the mobility requirements of their inhabitants, maritime connection services with the aforementioned islands were to be awarded by means of a tendering procedure for a period of five years.
