[G] Penny novels appeared in the early 20th century when, available for just a few pennies, they gained an audience also among the working classes.

[G] Penny novels, with their relatives the pulp and dime novels and penny novelettes, are the most widespread form of trivial literature - in other words, writing that aims to satisfy the tastes of a broad readership.

[G] Since the mid 1960s penny novels across the board have displayed certain typical characteristics: an A5 format, 64 pages, weekly issues, usually as part of a series, a colourful cover displaying an atmospheric illustration along with the title of the series and story.
