Of the important debut novels published last autumn, "Caspar" by Beate Rothmaier is particularly worthy of attention. This "anachronistic" book uses the methods of the Bildungsroman to raise absolutely fundamental questions about the conditions of (children's) happiness, self-discovery, self-realisation and the relationship between guilt and innocence against the background of a historically documented case of child neglect that occurred at the end of the 18th century. Then there is Kevin Vennemann's "Nahe Jedenev" (Near Yedenev), a novel in which the fairy tale is woven through with the menacing, a novel that gives the impression of being firmly rooted in a specific period and yet seems utterly timeless, rising rapturously above the world. Kirsten Fuchs, the author of "Die Titanic und Herr Berg (The Titanic and Mr Berg)", has written a novel in which sex and crime are served up adroitly in a setting overshadowed by the welfare system and the modern struggle for survival. Finally, we come to Matthias Göritz's "Der kurze Traum des Jakob Voss (The Short Dream of Jakob Voss)" in which, once again, everything turns around puberty as a phase that can determine someone's whole life.
