Bis zur "Ölkrise" im Jahre 1973, die den Anwerbestopp einleitete, warben deutsche Unternehmen - mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung während der ersten wirtschaftlichen Nachkriegszeitkrise 1966/67 - Frauen und Männer aus dem Mittelmeerraum an. [G]

Until the "oil crisis" in 1973, which brought the recruitment to a halt, and apart from a short interruption during the first economic crisis of the post-war period in 1966/67, German companies were hiring men and women from the Mediterranean countries.

Damit forcierte der Anwerbestopp gerade den von staatlicher Seite unerwünschten Wandel von der Arbeitswanderung über Daueraufenthalte zur Einwanderungssituation mit fester Bleibeabsicht. [G]

Since the mid-1950s, the Federal Republic of Germany had systematically recruited labour from abroad - there were recruitment agreements with countries like Italy, Yugoslavia, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. In November 1973, however, the organized recruitment of foreign labour to Germany was terminated.

Der Anwerbestopp hatte zwar die Ausländerbeschäftigung gesenkt, verstärkte jedoch die herrschende Tendenz zu Daueraufenthalt und Familiennachzug. [G]

The halt on recruitment had decreased the number of foreign nationals being employed, but it reinforced the trend towards long-term residence and the subsequent immigration of family members.
