1987 dann das Buch "Die zweite Schuld, oder: Von der Last Deutscher zu sein", in dem er die These vertritt, dass nach der ersten Schuld, das Ausweichen vor der kritischen Verarbeitung der eigenen Fehler der NS-Zeit die "Zweite Schuld" ausmacht.
