1966 wurde in West-Berlin die Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie (dffb) gegründet. Die Schmiede des Autorenfilms, an der u.v.a. auch Regisseur Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) studierte, legt ihren Schwerpunkt auf die Bereiche Regie, Kamera und Produktion. [G]

The Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie (dffb) was founded in West Berlin in 1966. The forge of the German arthouse cinema, the dffb focuses on directing, cinematography and production. Director Wolfgang Petersen (The Boat) is just one of its many illustrious alumni.

2002 wurde mit der Berlinale-Sektion "Perspektive deutsches Kino" ein weiteres Forum für den deutschen Filmnachwuchs geschaffen. [G]

Hamburg became another stronghold of experimental film in the sixties. It was here that the first film cooperative was set up, with film-makers such as Werner Nekes and Dore O. (with films such as juem-juem of 1967, they are among the most important representatives of structural films; as well as the material aspect of experimental montage, their work also contained sexual associations), Helmuth Costard, Helmut Herbst and Klaus Wyborny (who used new narrative forms in his feature film Die Geburt der Nation of 1972/73).

Soon, the attention of exhibition-makers, too, was drawn to the media art forms: Sigurd Hermes and Gerhard Büttenbender were invited to be the curators of the first experimental film section at documenta 5 (1972) in Kassel, and Birgit Hein and Wulf Herzogenrath were invited to be the curators of the film and video section of Documenta 6 (1977), which was altogether outstanding, with a wide range of the latest media art (video and audio collection with tapes, video installations, micro-televisions and its own video studio for documenting the exhibition process).
